My kids were on their early 20s before getting their licenses or cars. They showed little interest in getting them at 16, and though I tried to interest them and work with them through those years, they just didnt seem to care. In speaking with friends who have kids about the same age, it seems they also didnt care, and didnt get a license or cars until they were much older. This Is the new normal. It's hard for me to understand as having a license and a car was my generations, and the preceding generations, ticket to freedom. It's how we socialized. With the advent of the internet, and specifically social media and smart phones, young adults can socialize without leaving home. So they dont seem to care as much. Add to that Uber/Lyft, Byrd and Lime scooters, and the many other ride share and transportation innovations that are changing the need for car ownership, and I think this is just the beginning of the end of our love affair with automobiles. On the flip side, you cant get injured in a computer crash, or pregnant in the back seat of the internet... 😆 -

This Forum. Has it changed? For the better or for the worse? Or not a at all?
by ThomasCovenant inwhen i post i try to imagine that i am at a social gathering or sometimes in someone's house as a dinner guest.
that way it is easier to follow the community guidelines and posting rules set out on the site at the bottom of the page.
i wouldn't want to make a fool of myself in public.

To play devils advocate for a moment, most anything JW has been discussed to death here. Everything has been discussed, dissected, scrutinized, and reviewed from multiple angles, many times over. Most of the scandles are old news, or a new case with the same storyline. It's not that any of these things shouldn't be discussed at length ever again, but after a while, it's nice to discuss other things. People come here to learn and grow. Most show up questioning themselves and the beliefs instilled in them. If they stick around, they start to grow as a person. As we grow, we need more. Being able to discuss politics, and other subjects, helps us to grow, and makes this an ever evolving forum of discussion and debate. Many who come here have never discussed or shared their political feelings, or world views, as those were stifled, repressed, or nonexistent, as witnesses. This is a place where, as ex witnesses, it seems safe to share our thoughts and viewpoints on such matters, as other places may seem much more intimidating, given our retarded learning curve and understanding of all things forbidden by JW (especially for those of us born in). Personally, I feel safer expressing my thoughts here, even though I know none of you. Yet you all know where I come from. That you may excuse a lack of complete understanding, or forgive a stupid mistake in something I say, or a viewpoint I hold, as I am forever flawed by the beliefs I was raised with. The beliefs each and every one of you held at some point. So we have an understanding. A common ground from which we can relate, even if we differ in our current thoughts and beliefs.
And besides. Who wants to rehash the same thing over and over again? One of the BIGGEST issues I had with going to meetings. After being gone for over 10 years, when I came back, it was the same frickin thing, regurgitated over and over. Like I never left!
No disrespect to those who bring up old subjects. I completely understand there is a constant influx of new ones questioning their jw beliefs, and it's so much easier to look at something new that comes up here, or ask questions, than to go digging in the archives. And its definitely interesting to hear a new take on our old beliefs, a new scandal, or a new lawsuit, or new developments within the organization. It's just nice to be able to discuss other topics.

Mr Smolletts station in life, as well as his race and sexual orientation, definitely all factored into this outcome. He is the perfect storm of problems for the judicial system. The absolute best way for the prosecutors (as well as many others who support/defend him, that have clout) to save face in his case, is to make it go away as quickly and quietly as possible. Yes, it's an uproar now, but because it was dealt with so swiftly, it will all but be forgotten about in the next few months, as the news cycle moves through everything that is to come. As the perfect storm, Jussie and his defenders, will scream bigotry, hate, bias, and victimhood, all because he is black, and gay. That is the circus his attorneys would create, and the media would stir the pot. Those prosecutors would rather take a little egg on their face now than go through months of that circus, and risk him getting off in the end. At least that's my opinion on the matter.
Given what we all know he did, and that instead of just wiping his brow, counting his lucky stars, and slinking off quietly into the shadows, he again spoke out at a news conference, arrogantly proclaiming victory and his innocence, I predict we will see him again, getting himself into trouble. Maybe sooner than later, If he insists on continuing his public statements declaring his innocence and vindication, flying in the face of the Chicago police. I will not be surprised in the least if something harmful to his health "accidentally" crosses his path. Like an acute case of lead poisoning...

Nicely done in your short time frame. People are so curious about the beliefs, and answering their questions, quite often leads to many more questions. Well done

Good read and a well written story. Mark is such a great spokesman for the JW abuse whistleblowers. Humble and sincere, but a bold and thorough investigator.

Is New Zealand right to ban military style guns?
by ThomasCovenant inin response to the recent terrorist attack in new zealand their government is proposing to ban semi automatic and military style weaponry.. do you agree with this idea?.
would they be better off allowing more of these weapons instead?.
would it be better to perhaps allow more of the muslim community for example, to be armed with semi automatic guns to protect themselves at their places of worship?.

Please show me where police carry grenades. Flash bangs and smoke, maybe. But actual grenades? Show me.
Do you understand that an "assault" rifle, more correctly termed a semi automatic, only fires as fast as you pull the trigger? Not to mention that you've got to aim.
You realize that if the governments succeed in taking away all semiautomatic guns, cops, the military, and all terrorists, drug dealers, gang bangers, smugglers, thugs, and just general bad dudes will continue to have them, sell them, buy them, and use them, right? And in the event that bad guys cant get their hands on them, they'll resort to using other means, like pipe bombs, fertilizer bombs, vehicles, airplanes, poison gas, I mean the list goes on and on. You're focus is on the wrong part of the problem. Getting rid of guns, any gun, isnt going to stop a bad guy from killing people.

Not JW related, but should the electoral college be abolished?
by Billzfan23 inelizabeth warren, alexandria ocasio cortez, and other democrats are openly expressing interest (and in come cases, campaign promises) that the electoral college has to go.
i disagree for a few reasons.
first, the 25 states (out of 50, so 50%) with the smallest populations only get 21% of the electoral college votes (in our current system, today).

Exactly, Minimus. I saw that on the news yesterday, that they want to lower the voting age to 16, along with removing the electoral college. There was something else the wanted to reform as well, cant remember. Anyway, Such an obvious grab at democratic votes, imo. If you're afraid you can't win with the rules already in place, change the rules! What a novel idea... =/
But hurry! Got to get it done before the next election!!!

"(LA/Hollywood/NYC/Chicago) would be able to decide the winner of EVERY election until the end of time if the electoral college is gotten rid of."
Which is why Democrats want to abolish it...

For the record; New Zealand, imo, should do what its citizens decide, by vote, to do. As my above statement says, I think it's a mistake to outlaw guns, but I dont live there and it's up to them to do what they think is best. Besides, the orcs and villains of middle earth are still using bronze age weaponry, so I think they'll be ok. 😉

While correct, a semi automatic is no real defence against tanks and aircraft, it is still better than single action pistols and long guns. Semi autos would give any militia formed, a fighting chance, and the sheer number of citizens that would rise up in defense of this country, against a hostile domestic action would be huge. Many, if not most, military personnel would leave and join in the rebellion. Notice no other country has dared an invasion of the U.S. primarily because its citizens are armed better than most other countries militaries.
"If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns".
Reading and comprehending the meaning of this is key in being a sane and logical citizen of the U.S. You may choose not to own a gun, but it is the absolute truth. Only law abiding citizens would turn their guns in, if they were banned. That leaves the criminal element, who already break the law, still armed, amongst a sea of unarmed citizens, waiting to be victimized. Not to mention unchecked law enforcement and military. Live in a country that bans guns and feel secure because of it? You are in denial.
I don't personally care for guns. I would love to live in a world where there are no guns. But that is never going to be a reality, and in the unfortunate event I am confronted, I for one would rather die on my feet, fighting, than on my knees begging for my life.
